Known for being the most flexible, practical window dressing, more recently shutters are being installed to windows for their aesthetic values too. They dress a window beautifully and can either inject color or blend in to the scheme of a room, effortlessly.

Choosing the colors of shutters can have a huge impact on the aesthetic effect they have on your home, and it's important to make the right choice given you will own and love your shutters for years to come. Ensuring your shutters’ tone and color complements your interior is the first step, but you need to take the exterior colors and style of your home into consideration too, to avoid creating an unappealing clash. So if you're looking for plantation shutter color options and inspiration, then here's our handy guide to help you.

Our guide to choosing plantation shutter colors

When brainstorming ideas for plantation shutter colors, you need to consider a few different things. The first is the current color and style of your home. You want the shutter color you decide on to complement, rather than clash, with your current home decor. If you have a traditional looking home, for instance, a bright shutter color may look a little out of place.

You will also want your chosen shutter color to complement the window frame. Some people prefer to match the window frame to the shutter color to get a more uniform look, while others prefer to go for similar, but not identical, shades. A clash between the frame and the shutter can look stylish, but all depends on the look your trying to achieve with your interior (bold vs calming).

Warm colored tones

Shutter colors that are warm-based, like our Clotted Cream, Alabaster and Ivory give a cozy, comforting feel to your home. If you're installing shutters to a room with primarily cool colors on the walls and furniture, inviting a warm color shutter will make your room feel a little more snug. For a really different look, a warm-toned stain like Rose, Java and Chestnut also gives the same effect of making the room feel cozy, but remember the darker the stain the more dramatic the look. Another benefit to warm colored shutters is the hygge look it brings. Hygge interiors are big in the States right now.

Cool tones for plantation shutters

If you're looking for a more nautical or Scandinavian look to your home, then cool colored shutters are for you. Shades of cool gray look particularly neat if your home’s design is a similar palette. Cool colored shutters are particularly great for bathroom shutters as they achieve a minimal, clean look, but they also work well on dining room shutters like the picture above when complemented with rustic furniture to bring character.

Bold colored shutters

Going for a bright and bold red, blue, or yellow shutter can make a fun statement and when pared with high-end furniture and rugs, they achieve a real brave, high-end look. We recommend taking a look at our Designer Collection if you're looking for shutter colors in shades like Claret Red or Peacock Blue.

Neutral color window shutters

By far the most popular colors for plantation shutters are neutral tones. These include Bright White which is a true white, Silk White which is a softer white,  and Shell and Biscuit which are both more taupe shades but still very neutral shutter colors. There are huge benefits to ordering neutral color shutters. They complement all interiors, window sills and color schemes and crucially, they make an outstanding addition to the exterior of your home, often an overlooked decision but very important. Classic white shutters are the most popular choice for their timeless style inside and outside the home, or to warm your palette up, why not opt for off-white shutters?

Different wooden finishes for shutters

Going for a more exciting wash can be a good way to add interest to a neutral-toned shutter. The Shutter Store offer a White Wash wooden shutter in our American Hardwood range which is perfect for that sought after vintage feel.

The best color shutters for cream houses

If you live in a cream home, count yourself in luck! Any of our color options would suit a cream house, due to it's timeless and neutral appearance. We love seeing our popular white shutters in cream houses as they perfectly complement the neutral color. Adding a pop of color with your shutters is also a fun way to add a vibrant and unique touch to your home.
