It’s hard to imagine a cozier style than rustic décor. With its earthy tones and homespun charm, it’s one of our favorites. But can you achieve the look with shutters? In short, yes. In, um, slightly longer…yes, definitely! Shutters are the perfect piece to complement your rustic space. But before we get to that, you might be wondering…
What is Rustic Design?
Rustic décor embraces the beauty of nature and the charm of countryside living. Drawing inspiration from rural living (and some industrial touches), it features elements that evoke a sense of comfort, warmth, and nostalgia. Think Grandma’s apple pie cooling by the window and you’ll catch our meaning.
Within any rustic-inspired space, you’ll find natural materials, earthy tones, and plenty of textures. A very broad design style, it embraces imperfections, aged surfaces, and materials like reclaimed wood, stone, and wrought iron. What’s not to love?
Rustic Shutters
When choosing your perfect rustic shutters, the first factors to consider are material and color. As mentioned already, rustic décors incorporate earthy and warm colors as well as natural textures and materials.
That’s why when anybody asks, we’ll always say that Natural Hardwood is the only choice for rustic spaces. It’s lightweight, durable, and available in our full range of styles and finishes. This includes seven natural wood stains and five limewash finishes. That way, you’re sure to find the perfect shade of DIY rustic shutter to complement your space.
DIY Rustic Shutter Styles
Let’s start with the classics first, shall we?
You can never go wrong with full-height shutters – the all-rounder of the shutter world. Covering the whole of your windows, they offer light and privacy in equal measure. Plus, look at how pretty they are!
Next up, we have our café style range. Inspired by the shutters found in the cafés of Paris in the 19th century, they’re a chic take on a classic style. So stylish, in fact, you might be able to charge your guests for their cup of joe.
With their separate top and bottom sections, tier on tier shutters give you the ultimate control over how much light comes into your home. The perfect choice for those of us who want the best of both worlds. Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
Or, how about something a little different? Our solid raised shutters are made of solid panels with a look that’s inspired by the shutters of yesteryear. So, if you want to truly lean into the rustic theme, these might be the ones for you.
Finally, there are special shaped shutters. Whether you’ve got an arch, triangle, or circular space, no window gets left behind. We can do it all.
Finish the Look
You’ve selected your style and chosen your finish. Well done – you’re almost there. Now all there is to do is finish off your shutters. Hurray!
Firstly, choose from one of four slat sizes. While this is down to personal preference, we recommend larger slats for large windows (and small for small windows). This will create a sense of cohesion and create a more prominent visual impact.
Secondly, let’s think about your tilt rod option. If you want a fresh look with clean lines, choose our hidden or clearview rods. If, however, you want something more traditional, the central rod is the way to go. If you have chosen solid panel shutters, you can skip this step.
Lastly, it’s time to choose your hinges. We have eight options for you to choose from. There are no wrong answers here, but why not lean into the rustic theme with our Brass or Antique hinges? And that’s it, you’re all done.
