What Are Louvered Shutters

TSSUS_17_Kitchen_Full_Height_Doors.webp

Louvers are the individual horizontal slats on a shutter panel that rotate open and closed to control light and privacy. The terms "louvers" and "slats" are interchangeable — they refer to the same part of the shutter.

Unlike solid panel shutters, louvered shutters let you adjust how much light enters the room and how much visibility you have — without having to swing the full panel open.

What Louver Sizes Are Available?

Older colonial-style shutters feature very small louvers, which are now considered outdated. Modern plantation shutters come in a range of wider louver sizes, each suited to different window heights and interior styles:

Slat Size

Best For

Style

2½"

Shallow or short windows

Traditional look, good privacy

3" – 3½"

Medium to tall windows

Popular mid-size, clean lines

4½"

Tall windows with deep recess

Most contemporary, maximum light and visibility

Do All Plantation Shutters Have Louvers?

No. While louvered plantation shutters are by far the most popular style, solid panel shutters are also available. Here's how the two compare:

Louvered shutters also support a mid-rail — a horizontal divider that splits the panel into upper and lower sections with independently moving louvers, giving you even more flexibility over light and privacy.

Are All Louvered Shutters Operable?

Generally, yes. All of our plantation shutters feature louvers that rotate up and down, designed to close flat in the upward direction for maximum light blockage and privacy.

However, fixed (non-operable) louvers are available by special request on our Classic Poplar Hardwood shutters. These can be set permanently closed or open at a fixed angle — popular for applications like closet doors, cabinet fronts, or decorative room features.

How to Choose the Right Louver Size

Our free color samples are cut from an actual 2½" louver, giving you a feel for the material, color, and louver scale in your own window before you order.
