When designing your custom shutters, one of the key decisions you will make is louver size. The terms louvers and slats both refer to the same thing — the horizontal blades that rotate to control light and privacy. Each size brings different benefits, so here is everything you need to know before making your choice.
We offer three louver sizes to suit any window size, room style, and personal preference:
Louver Size | Best For | Style |
|---|---|---|
2½" | Small windows, shallow recesses, traditional look | Classic, colonial |
3½" | Most windows — the most popular choice | Contemporary or traditional |
4½" | Large windows, maximum light, modern look | Modern, clean lines |
Our best-selling size is 3½" — a versatile middle ground that works well with windows big and small, lets in plenty of light, and suits most interior styles.
Not necessarily. Each louver size has a minimum recess depth requirement depending on the frame type you are fitting your shutters to. Installing louvers that are too large for your window could result in the slats hitting an obstruction such as an alarm sensor, window handle, or the glass itself.
Our shutter measuring guide outlines the depth requirements for each louver size, and includes frame templates to help you find the right fit. If you find you don't have enough depth for the louver size you want, our shutter experts can help find a solution — including framing options that extend your recess depth so the louvers can fully operate without hitting any obstructions.

All louver sizes offer equal privacy when fully closed. The difference comes when the louvers are open:
Larger louvers allow more light into the room when open and give a less obstructed view through the window.
Smaller louvers are better for rooms where you want more control over how much light enters.
All sizes close flat in the upward direction only.
If maximising natural light is a priority, larger louvers are worth considering.

Your louver size choice will have a noticeable impact on the overall look of your shutters:
4½" louvers give the cleanest, most modern look — ideal for contemporary interiors, open plan spaces, and rooms with large windows.
3½" louvers work with both modern and traditional interiors and are the most versatile choice.
2½" louvers suit traditional, colonial, or period-style homes where a classic look is preferred — elegant without being too busy.
Window proportions should guide your louver size choice:
Large or tall windows — the larger the window, the larger the louver should be. Larger louvers achieve a clean, proportional look. Smaller louvers on a large window will result in more slats per panel, creating a busier appearance.
Small windows — opt for a smaller louver size. A large louver on a small window could result in only one or two slats per panel, which doesn't look proportional. If in doubt, ask our shutter experts for a recommendation based on your specific measurements.
Shutters are straightforward to clean regardless of louver size. That said, larger louvers have fewer slats per panel, meaning slightly less surface area to wipe down — a minor but practical advantage if speed is a priority.
Our best-selling louver size is 3½". It works well with most window sizes, suits both modern and traditional interiors, and strikes the right balance between light entry and a clean look.
2½" louvers give a traditional, colonial look and work well on smaller windows or in shallower recesses. 3½" is the most versatile all-round choice. 4½" louvers are best for large windows and contemporary interiors where maximum light and clean lines are the priority.
For large or tall windows, 4½" louvers are generally recommended. They achieve a proportional look and maximise light entry. Using smaller louvers on a large window results in more slats per panel, which can look busy.
Possibly — we offer framing options that can extend your recess depth to accommodate larger louvers. Check our measuring guide for depth requirements, or contact our shutter experts who can advise on the best solution for your window.
Yes — the terms are interchangeable. Louvers and slats both refer to the horizontal rotating blades on a plantation shutter panel.
