Shutters for Georgian Sash Windows

Sash windows are a hallmark of Georgian and historic home design, known for their multi-pane, grid-like glazing. If you have them, you likely want to keep that period character intact while still getting the benefits of a modern window treatment. Plantation shutters do exactly that — adding privacy, noise reduction, and insulation, customized to match the traditional style of your windows.

Traditional Shutter Design Elements

You don't need to compromise the vintage look of a sash window to get a modern, functional shutter. These design choices will keep the traditional aesthetic intact:

Design Choice

Why It Works

Smaller louvers

Available from 2½" up to 4½", stick with 2½" to 3" for the most traditional, period-appropriate look

Central tilt rod

A visible front-and-center rod (rather than a hidden one) is the historically accurate choice for vintage-style shutters

Narrower panels

Choosing the largest number of panels for your window width gives narrower, folding panels that better match a sash window's proportions

Why Choose Shutters Over Other Window Coverings

Beyond the period-appropriate look, plantation shutters offer practical benefits that blinds and drapes simply can't match:

  • Increase property value — shutters are a long-term investment that can support a higher resale price

  • Reduce noise — lower street noise for a quieter room and better sleep

  • Improve insulation — full height shutters help reduce heating and cooling costs

  • Easy to clean — a quick wipe with a dry cloth, no chemicals, vacuuming, or laundering required

  • Reduce dust and allergens in the home

  • Maximum privacy — louvers close flat with an overlap for optimal light blockage and privacy

  • Built to last — covered by a warranty, with a lifespan of years or decades as a permanent home fixture

  • Family friendly — durable and low-maintenance for busy households

How to Measure and Install Shutters on Sash Windows

Even first-time DIYers can successfully fit plantation shutters to a sash window by following our measuring guides. Start by deciding between inside mount and outside mount.

Inside Mount

If your window has sufficient recess depth without obstructions (alarm sensors, locks, etc.) and doesn't tilt inwards for cleaning, inside mount is a great fit. Sash windows typically slide up and down or side to side and sit recessed with double-paned glass, which usually makes them well suited to this option.

Choose an L-Frame for a simple, streamlined look that won't interfere with existing trim, or a Z-Frame to add decorative trim around the shutter if your window doesn't already have any.

Outside Mount

If recess depth is limited, or your window tilts in for cleaning, outside mount keeps the window opening clear. The frame mounts directly onto the wall or trim surrounding the window — even over existing decorative trim, with shims used to keep it level if needed. Our frame templates help you visualize exactly where the frame will sit before you measure.
