How to Install Shutters on Bay Windows

Your shutters have arrived. Bay window installations take a little more time than a single window; you’ll be working section by section, but by following each step in order, you’ll end up with a clean, consistent finish across the whole bay.

Tip: This is one installation where a second pair of hands genuinely helps, particularly when aligning frames across the bay and joining them together.

What you’ll receive:

Your shutters will arrive in a few parts:

  • Shutter panels - boxed and labeled

  • Frame pieces - boxed separately

  • A hardware pack with all required fixings - inside the frame box

Before you start

Make sure you have everything ready before you begin. You’ll need a few basic tools:

  • Rubber mallet or small hammer

  • Phillips head screwdriver

  • Drill

  • Spirit level

  • Suitable wall anchors for your wall type

  • Packing material: Shims or wedges (or cardboard)

  • Painter’s caulk

Step 1: Assemble all frames

Work on one section at a time. We recommend assembling your frame on a soft surface, such as the cardboard packaging, to protect the finish.

Prepare the frame pieces

  • Lay the frame pieces face down on a flat surface.

  • Each piece is marked to show its position. Check these before you start.

Connect the frame

Your frame will connect in one of two ways, depending on the range.

Adding T-posts or T-bars (if included)

If your order includes a T-post or T-bar, fit it into the frame using the pre-drilled holes. T-posts are labelled to guide placement.

T-post labels: T1 = first T-post and T2 = second T-post (working from left to right)

Step 2: Position all frames in the bay

Before fixing anything, place all assembled frames into their correct positions in the bay.

  • Position each frame in its corresponding window section

  • Check how the frames meet at the corners

  • Make sure everything lines up evenly across the full bay

Important: Frames may sit tightly together or with small gaps between them, depending on your window design; both are normal. What matters is that they’re aligned and level.

Step 2: Loosely fix all frames

With all frames in position, fix each one lightly:

  • Add 1–2 screws per frame, top and bottom or one on each side

  • Do not fully tighten yet.

Important: Keep all frames loose until every section is aligned. It’s much easier to make adjustments while there’s still a little movement in the frames.

Step 7: Secure the frame

Once everything is aligned and operating correctly:

  • Fully tighten all the frame screws.

  • Check that the frame is secure on all sides.
