Tips for Refreshing Your Shutters

Yellowing or fading blinds and curtains can make a room feel dreary. Hollow vinyl shutters or composite wood shutters may not hold up to the test of time. If your window treatments are looking tired, it may be time for an upgrade. Plantation shutters from The Shutter Store are built to last and rarely need any retouching or maintenance — but here are some tips if you do want to refresh them.

How to Refresh Vinyl Shutters

Our vinyl shutters are 100% solid polyvinyl with an aluminum core, painted with a minimum of 7 layers of paint mixed with UV protectant and sealant. They are warranted against cracking, peeling, yellowing, or fading.

Tips for keeping vinyl shutters looking their best:

  • Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them looking as good as new

  • Adjust hinges, magnets, and slat tension using our quick maintenance videos

  • Repair a loose slat pin or tilt rod easily without needing to reorder

How to Refresh Wooden Shutters

Our wooden shutters are 100% solid poplar, not composite. Painted with the same 7-layer UV-protected finish, they are covered by the same warranty as our polyvinyl shutters.

Tips for keeping wooden shutters in great shape:

  • Keep them away from moisture and wipe off any condensation or water exposure promptly

  • Clean using a dry feather duster or microfiber cloth to prevent warping

  • For dings or scratches, sand to a smooth finish and touch up using the matching paint provided in your hardware kit

  • Tighten slat tension in under a minute following our maintenance videos

Upgrading to a More Modern Design

If you currently have older traditional or colonial style shutters, there are several design updates that can bring them into a more contemporary look:

  • Wider panels and larger slats allow more light in when open and create cleaner, more open lines

  • Hidden tilt rod eliminates the visible bar down the middle of each panel for a sleeker, more modern appearance

  • Recessed magnets keep panels closed with a subtle, hidden mechanism compared to older shutters with knobs, latches, or large block magnets

  • Frame options range from minimal profile L-Frames to decorative Z-Frames and Deco Frames that add the look of crown molding
