Plantation Shutters for Spanish Style Homes

Spanish style homes are defined by their warmth and character — terracotta roofs, earth-toned stucco exteriors, natural stone floors, carved wooden details, and arched doorways and windows. It's a style rooted in natural materials and craftsmanship, and plantation shutters are a natural match for it.

Here's how to choose the right shutters for a Spanish style home, from material and color through to shutter style and frame.

Why Wooden Shutters Work Best

For Spanish style interiors, wooden plantation shutters are the most authentic choice. Our shutters are made from 100% solid Poplar or Paulownia hardwood— thick, strong, and durable — which sits naturally alongside the solid walls, stone floors, and carved wood features typical of this style.

Wood also offers the greatest flexibility for color and finish, which matters in a style where getting the tones right is everything.

Choosing the Right Color and Finish

Spanish style homes typically call for warm, earthy tones rather than cool or bright whites. Here's how our finish options map to that palette:

Which Shutter Style to Choose

Spanish style homes typically feature smaller, narrower windows, so the priority is choosing a style that complements rather than overpowers the opening.

  • Full height shutters with 2½" slats and a central tilt rod are the most traditional choice, giving you a classic louvered look that fits naturally with the period character of a Spanish style home. Narrower panels work best on narrower windows.

  • Solid raised panel shutters are another excellent option. Their subtle beveled profile echoes the carved wooden detailing common in Spanish interiors, and they offer maximum light blockage and privacy when closed.

Choosing the Right Frame

For Spanish style interiors, a decorative frame adds a finishing touch that complements the woodworking detail typically found throughout the home:

  • Z-Frame (face mount) — sits flush with the wall edge and features a decorative overlapping trim that surrounds the window opening, available in various widths to suit more intricate or simpler styles.

  • L Frame (outside mount) — mounts on the wall surrounding the window, extending the depth slightly for a more substantial, crafted look.

Both are available in the Luxe Wood and American Wood range.
