Installing DIY plantation shutters on a patio door is just as straightforward as installing any window shutter. You follow the same measure and install steps, just working on a larger scale to cover the door opening.
For French doors with handles and locks in the way, we offer custom cut-outs to work around the hardware so you can still achieve a full height shutter installation.
For French doors, plantation shutters mount directly to the door using an outside mount frame, typically a Large L-Frame to allow room for the slats to rotate fully.
Key considerations for French doors:
Always use a 4-sided frame for French doors.
If the frame does hit door hardware, order under our "French Door Cut-out" option with either a squared or rounded cut-out to accommodate the hardware.
When measuring, include the width of the frame and ensure it does not overlap any projecting trim surrounding the glass.
Our shutter experts can review the configuration details with you during the Design Check callback. Ensure you select the callback check option when checking out.
For a glass door that slides back and forth to access the patio:
Select left, right, and top for your frame sides rather than a 4-sided frame, to keep the bottom clear and avoid a tripping risk when stepping outside.
Use 4 to 6 panels folding out from the center toward each side to distribute the weight evenly. Do not hang all panels in one direction as this puts too much weight on the hinges on that side.
Add vertical T-posts at no extra charge for further support and to split up the weight of the panels. T-posts allow panels to be hinged separately on each side, preventing sagging over time.
If you have carpet or rugs in front of the doorway, request a standard floor clearance deduction so the shutter panels can swing open freely without catching on the floor covering.
