Do Plantation Shutters Warp?

Shutters are a long-term investment for your home. A common concern is whether they will warp, expand, or contract when exposed to harsh sunlight, extreme temperatures, or moisture. Here is what you need to know.

Do Wooden Shutters Warp?

Our wooden shutters are specifically built to resist warping.

Our wooden shutters are 100% solid hardwood, not hollow or composite. This increases their durability and rigidity significantly. They are coated with several layers of UV protectant and sealant, also mixed into the paint or stain color, so they can withstand high heat and direct sunlight without warping or cracking.

Can Wooden Shutters Get Wet?

If your windows are in a splash zone such as near a kitchen sink, bathtub, or shower, we generally recommend polyvinyl shutters for those windows. However, wooden shutters will still hold up well if they are not directly under running water, provided you wipe them down if they get splashed or if humidity causes condensation.

Different wood types have different tolerances:

  • Amercian wood shutters — smooth surface, easy to clean and keep dry, a good option for kitchens and bathrooms with reasonable care

  • Luxe Hardwood shutters — deeper, more textured wood grain that is harder to keep from absorbing liquids. Best kept in dry areas to maximise lifespan

Do Vinyl Shutters Warp?

No. Our polyvinyl shutters are fully waterproof and will not warp.

Our waterproof vinyl shutters are made from solid polyvinyl reinforced with an aluminum core. They can be installed anywhere throughout the home, including:

  • Directly in showers

  • Bathrooms and kitchens

  • Any high-humidity environment

They will not warp, crack, or discolor from constant moisture or humidity exposure. If the shutters will be in direct contact with water, opt for a painted hinge rather than brass or nickel to prevent rusting.

What is the Acceptable Warp Tolerance?

Our manufacturing standards allow for no more than 1/16" of warp per 12" of shutter length. Any warp within this tolerance is considered within spec and will not affect the look or operation of your shutters. Any warping outside this tolerance within the warranty period is covered under our 5-year warranty.
