No — vinyl shutters aren't designed to be painted after production. If you're after a bold custom color, or want the flexibility to repaint down the road, wooden shutters are the better choice. Here's why, and what your color options look like either way.
Our Affordable Fauxwood and American Polyvinyl ranges are made from waterproof solid vinyl with an aluminum core. They're painted at the factory and finished with multiple layers of UV protectant and sealant, which makes them durable, but also makes it very difficult for any additional paint to adhere once the shutters arrive.
Vinyl is also a hard, non-porous material that can't be sanded down to remove the existing paint or UV coating, so there's no practical way to strip it back and start fresh the way you could with wood.
Some specialty paints may technically work over vinyl, but they tend to be costly, harder to apply evenly, and unlikely to hold up well over time.
Even though vinyl shutters can't be repainted, you're not limited to plain white. Our color range includes:
Range | Color Options |
|---|---|
Luxe Polyvinyl | 2 standard colors: Vivid White & Traffic White |
American Polyvinyl | 2 standard colors: White & Swiss Coffee |
Between the two ranges, you'll likely find a good match or a versatile neutral that fits your décor, even if you can't customize it after the fact.
If you're after a wider color range, or like the idea of being able to repaint in the future, wooden shutters are the way to go.
Wooden shutters can be easily painted or stained. You can order them:
Unfinished and primed, ready for you to apply your own paint
Raw and unfinished, ready for you to stain yourself
Pre-finished in one of our standard paint or stain colors
Yes. If you've ordered a painted wooden shutter and want a different color down the line, it's possible with a bit of time and effort. Gently sand away the existing paint, UV protectant, and sealant to reveal the wood underneath, then apply your new color for an even finish.
