Plantation shutters are not total blackout due to slight light seepage around the frame and between the slats, but they come remarkably close. For a completely darkened room, we recommend pairing your shutters with blackout blinds or drapes.
Our slats are designed to close completely flat in the upward direction, with each slat overlapping the next by approximately ½" to prevent light from coming through between the slats when closed.
100% solid construction — whether wood or vinyl — means the panels themselves are thick, sturdy, and significantly more effective at blocking light than curtains or blinds.
Custom made to your exact dimensions down to 1/8" of an inch, eliminating the gaps that off-the-shelf shutters leave around the edges.
Shutter frames have a light block piece that extends behind the panels to reduce light bleeding between the panels and the frame.
Where multiple panels meet, the right panel overlaps the left to block additional light between panels.
Caulking around the outside edge of your installed frame further can reduce further light.

Blinds leave gaps around the edges, and their blades do not overlap tightly enough to completely darken a room. Curtains allow light to peek through depending on the fabric, and neither is as thick, and solid as our shutters.
For maximum light blockage, we offer solid raised panel shutters. Made from 100% solid paulownia wood with no movable slats, they provide full coverage similar to a cabinet door and block significantly more light than louvered shutters.
For louvered shutters, the slats are designed to close flat with an overlap to minimise light bleed, though a slight glow may be present between the slats and the solid stiles.
Full height shutters — recommended for maximum room darkening, covering the full window with a 4-sided frame
Cafe style shutters — leave the top of the window open, so not ideal for full blackout
Tier on tier shutters — have a slight gap between the upper and lower tiers
For the best blackout results, choose full height shutters with a 4-sided frame and caulk around the outer edge after installation.
