How to Avoid Common Mistakes When Choosing Shutters

When it comes to choosing internal shutters, the style and design combinations are endless, so you are sure to be able to customise the best option to fit your windows. Most style options come down to personal preference, so there is no right or wrong choice. However there are certain steps you can take to ensure your order correctly reflects the style you are envisioning.

Resources to Review Before Ordering

Our product page configurator walks you through designing your shutters. But to get started, you will need to measure accurately. Our measuring guides:

  • Break down measuring instructions step by step for inside mount and outside mount

  • Provide templates with detailed specs and measurements for all frame styles

  • Help you choose shutters that will install easily and operate correctly with your window structure

Design Your Shutters in 4 Steps — Tips to Get It Right

Step 1: Enter Your Dimensions

The key here is to read our measuring guides carefully before measuring. Inside mount: measure 3 spots for both width and height to check for variance. Always provide the exact smallest dimension Outside mount: measure 3 spots for both width and height and use the largest dimension. Either measure to the outside edge of any existing trim you want to cover, or measure the window opening and add the width of your chosen shutter frame.

Step 2: Choose Panels and Slats

The website will present panel options based on the dimensions you entered, so you will not accidentally choose something that cannot be manufactured. However there are still choices to make:

  • Number of panels: more panels means narrower panels that fold neatly when opened. Fewer panels means wider panels that let in more light when the slats are open but may be bulkier to swing open and closed.

  • Mid-rail: a great option for tall windows, but for shorter windows it may block too much light and limit the number of slats that can fit. If adding a mid-rail, measure from the bottom up to where you want the center of the rail to be.

  • Slat size: smaller slats like 2½" or 3" give more privacy and a traditional look. Larger slats like 3½" or 4½" let in more light and give a more modern appearance, provided you have enough recess depth for them to fully rotate.

  • Tilt rod: The hidden tilt rod offers cleaner lines and a more modern look. The central tilt rod gives a more traditional style and a bar to physically adjust the slats.

Step 3: Choose a Color or Finish

  • Color and finish are entirely personal preference. Whether you choose a contrasting or matching color to your existing decor, your shutters are sure to be a stunning addition.

  • The only way to make a mistake here is to rely solely on your screen to choose a color. Every device displays colors differently due to screen brightness, resolution, and settings. We offer 4 free samples so you can see the color in your home in person before committing.
