Outside mount shutter installations are typically the preferred option when the windows have no recess or reveal. If you are unsure if your faux plantation shutters are outside mount or inside mounted, we recommend you read both this guide and our inside mount faux shutters guide.

These instructions will help you understand how to measure your windows to install your shutters as an outside mount. Your windows will, in most instances,
be best measured for outside mount shutters when;

• The actual window is more or less flush with the internal wall of your home
• There is no deep window sill where, for example, you could easily place a plant or ornament

In short, there is no space to locate the shutters or the shutter frame inside the window recess. Double hung windows (also known as sash windows) are a typical type of window which is best suited to being measured for faux shutters installed as outside mount.

We recommend…

• You print a hard copy of this outside mount faux shutter guide and read it thoroughly.

• Measure with a metal tape, to give you legible, clear sizes.

• Take 3 width and 3 height sizes. It is the LARGEST of these sizes that you should use to order.

• Use the frame templates to help you measure correctly.

• The sizes you convey to us should INCLUDE THE FRAME.

We therefore recommend that you apply the ‘more is more’ concept, when deciding how many side of frame to order. There is no difference in price, irrespective how many sides of frame you select.

With our outside mount frames, the magnets are supplied top and bottom, ensuring the panels close and sit in position securely.

Below are different frame option combinations for your outside mount shutters. If in any doubt ask us for help.

1. Full height shutters work well with a 4 side frame

2. Tier on tier / double hung shutters are easier to install with 4 sides of frame.

3. Faux shutters covering the lower section of the window (cafe shutters) can have 2 sides of frame, however, 3 sided makes installation easier and the end result more professional.

4. Sliding patio doors are regularly opened and closed with people stepping in and out the doorway. A 3 sided frame is recommend to avoid any trip hazards.

An L frame is just that – when viewed on it’s side profile, it’s an ‘L’ shape. The frame is designed this way to make installation easy (the screw to attach the frame to the wall, is pre drilled at an angle, through the ‘thicker’ section at the rear) and to act as a light stop.

Remember – the sizes given to us will be the finished sizes including the shutter frame. Look at the diagram below and take note of the sizes at the back of the frame.

Is there a flat surface where the frame can be mounted? If you require a deeper frame, to ensure your louvers can tilt without hitting your trim or window, we can do this. Contact us for more information or order ‘Shutter Store to Choose’ and we will confirm when we call to check your order.

This frame has a moulded design, which is an ideal option if you have no trim around your window and wish to creative a more decorative look for your room.

This frame is pre drilled as shown, with the screw inserted at an angle, through a hole we drill for you.

Best suited to windows with no trim and a little depth between the internal wall and the window.

Similar in principle to the outside mount deco frame for faux shutters (as on the preceding page) this frame is a little deeper (when measured from front to back) which is ideal if you require added depth for louvers to tilt and not hit any part of the window.

If installing as an outside mount and additional clearance is needed to avoid handles or trim, this faux frame is a good solution.

Outside mount installations need a fixing for the panels. The best solution is to order your shutters with a frame.

The measurements you convey to us when ordering on the website or on the phone, must include the frame that we supply. The previous pages will help you establish which frame works best for you and shows the dimensions of the frame, to include when you order.

There are templates for our frames that you can print and cut to use when measuring your windows. Just include these frame templates when taking your measurements for your shutters and this will make the process much easier for you.

The green line in the photo shows there the frame would be located.

The black lines show that the width and height should include the frame, completely.

The blue line shows the location you would measure to if ordering full height faux shutters with a divide rail – measure from the very bottom up to the midpoint of where you want the middle of the divider rail.

The red line shows the point to which you would measure for a double hung faux shutter panel split or cafe style shutters.

Faux Plantation Shutters – Make Sure Your Slats Tilt and Looking Out for Problems!

While your windows may present challenges that appear unique, there are certain basics that apply to all windows that can help you measure successfully;

• You can attach your shutter frame directly onto existing trim – even if it appears you don’t have a completely flat surface (e.g. – curved trim)

• Handles and window locks can impede slats tilting fully.

• If, when reading this guide, your windows sound like they are best measured for outside mount shutters and the windows have trim, but you cannot see clearly a place to locate your frame, email us a photo of your window and we will show you exactly where to measure.

WATCH OUT FOR INWARD OPENING WINDOWS

If your windows open fully inwards or open into the room for cleaning purposes, make sure you take your measurements to ensure the windows will not hit the shutters or frame when the window is opened.
