Opening The Shutter Store in Las Vegas, Nevada was a decision that was reached after careful consideration. While we'll be selling our wooden shutters throughout the entire USA and had the whole of America to choose from when selecting our Headquarters location, there were several important factors for us to consider.
Nevada is known as a very 'pro business' state and so far our experiences in setting up The Shutter Store has vindicated this perception. Setting up a business can be a very bureaucratic process, with lot of red tape which is often frustrating when you want to just 'get going' and start operating your business.
We're fortunate in that we have established other companies selling plantation shutters in other countries, predominantly in the UK, therefore know what's require to get our US shutters business off the ground. While there's been nuances and certain areas where practices differ, on many levels the issues relating to setting up the business are the same. Setting up bank accounts, getting credit card merchant services, getting phone lines set up and offices kitted out - these business start up requirements are the same worldwide.
All staff who have been involved in the set up for The Shutter Store Inc, have found the folks of Nevada nothing but helpful. Jeff Sanchez and his team at Bank of Nevada, Rob Johnson in setting up our US Shutters company, Carla Dirk and Mary Marriot in partnering with us to handle our accounting - everyone's been supportive and genuinely helpful in making our journey to opening The Shutter Store a smooth one.
Mary Marriot, who owns Vegas based Bookkeeping firm, 'Just Ask Mary' made a very valid point about the city. Las Vegas has seen extraordinary growth in the past 10 years with the majority of people you encounter having moved to the city fairly recently. Everyone's there trying to make lives for themselves and are therefore open and friendly - wanting to make contacts and help each other.
I have to say that in all of my dealings so far in setting up our American shutters company, I have indeed found this to be the case. While we're looking forward to talking to people in New England, Florida, Seattle and San Diego - it seems Nevada and Las Vegas will indeed be a friendly and supportive place to have our shutters HQ and operate our plantation shutters company.
Of course, we've been lucky in that we've had the opportunity to choose where in the US to locate our Shutter HQ. Not everyone has that ability, as family ties, schooling and partners proximity to work can all dictate where you start you business. However for those who can choose and are looking for a friendly place to start doing business, Las Vegas sure seems a great place to be.
